Ballon d’ Or 2021: ‘No need’ – Lewandowski makes confession
Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski, has admitted that there is ‘no need’ for him to think about winning this year’s Ballon d’ Or because he still has a lot to do before and after the award gala.
Lewandowski insisted that he stopped thinking about the Ballon d’ Or too much because it would certainly not help him to think about his chances of winning the prestigious individual prize.
Speaking at a press conference while on international duty, the Poland international made it clear that he remains focused on upcoming games for club and country.
“I stopped thinking about it too much. It would certainly not help me to think about my chances of winning it, the speculations and the leaks in the media. I prefer to focus on something else,” Lewandowski said.
“Maybe when the gala gets closer, I will start to think about it. It is the beginning of November, so there is still some time. Of course, the Ballon d’Or is a great award, but there’s no need to think about it, because I still have a lot to do before and after the gala.”
Lewandowski was recently included in the 30-man nominees for this year’s Ballon d’ Or.
The 33-year-old was the favourite to win the Ballon d’ Or in 2020, having scored 55 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich, but the prize was not handed out because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lewandowski won the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich.
The winner for this year’s Ballon d’ Or will be announced on November 29.
