TOPIC: Believers’ True Riches (DCLM Daily Manna 22 January 2022)
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 (KJV)
1 Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their’s and our’s:
3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;
5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
KEY VERSE: “That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge.” – (1 Corinthians 1:5)
MESSAGE:
A rich man wanted to show his son how poor someone can be. He took him on a trip to a village. After they spent time on the farm of a poor family, he asked his son, “What did you learn?” His son replied, “We have one dog, they have four, we have a pool, they have rivers, we buy foods, they grow theirs, we have walls to protect us, they have friends, we have encyclopaedias, they have Bible. Thanks dad for showing me how poor we are”.
Most people of affluence are so blinded by their material wealth that they do not see their spiritual poverty. On the other hand, many poor but spiritually vibrant Christians get so preoccupied with the thought of their material deprivations that they do not appreciate their true riches. Apostle Paul gave thanks to God for the prosperity of the church in Corinth. When he mentioned that they were “enriched in every thing”, it was not in the sense of material prosperity but in matters of exposure to sound doctrine, grace and spiritual endowment.
It is unfortunate that many churches and Christians today measure themselves by the wrong scales of material affluence and popularity. In God’s reckoning, our true riches lie in our access to spiritual gifts and knowledge, with which the Corinthian church was quite blessed. Apostle Paul congratulated them for this, though as a prelude to his corrections of their abuse of the privileges.
If our Christian profession will amount to much and distinguish us from the world, we must covet spiritual blessings, especially knowledge of God’s word and grace for the overcoming life, more than our quest for material wealth.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
If earth has all the answers you seek, then your questions are too cheap.
