Matthew West Speaks Out About Controversial “Modest Is Hottest” Song
Five-time GRAMMY nominated singer/songwriter Matthew West is speaking out on social media after his “Modest Is Hottest” song created some controversy online.
West released the song on Father’s Day weekend calling it a “light-hearted take on an age-old struggle.” West initially explained, “As a dad raising daughters, this song is my ridiculously silly way of reminding them that their appearance doesn’t define them. While the world might focus on the outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart. Regardless, they are beautiful inside and out! (Even in turtlenecks).”
The song created some strong negative reactions online, including one from singer/songwriter Audrey Assad who took to social media saying, “‘Modest is hottest’ still entirely centers men and their preferences in the way a woman should dress, sets up being ‘hot’ as the goal for women, and positions all men as creeps who can’t handle seeing a woman’s skin without becoming out of control monsters. It’s demeaning to men and women. I really hate this phrase and somehow it is the one cockroach that survives literally everything.”
West released a short statement on social media on June 24th clarifying his intent for writing/releasing the track, which has since been removed from streaming services. “I’m blessed to be the father of two amazing daughters. I wrote a song poking fun at myself for being an over-protective dad and my family thought it was funny. The song was created as satire, and I realize some people did not receive it as it was intended. I’ve taken the feedback to heart. The last thing I want is to distract from the real reason why I make music: to spread a message of hope and love to the world.”
