Mountain Top Life MESSAGE:
The gifts of God to the body of Christ can be divided into three categories. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 says, “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.” The Bible also says, “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another” (Romans 12:4-5). According to our Memory Verse, the five-fold ministry include: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.
A prophet is one who speaks for God to man. He reveals God’s plans for the Church. God uses prophets to give direction and correction to the Church. According to 1 Corinthians 14:3, prophecy is given to edify, exhort and comfort the Church. In other words, prophecy should build up, stir up and cheer up. Prophecy that tears down the body and depresses the people is not from God. Prophecy always serves to encourage and strengthen. Sometimes, there could be a call for repentance, but it will result in building and not destruction. A good example of a New Testament prophet is Barnabas. His name means son of consolation or encouragement (Acts 4:36). He exhorted the body to purposefully and steadfastly hold on to the Lord (Acts 11:23-24). Other New Testament prophets are John the Baptist (Luke 1:76) and Agabus (Acts 11:27-28; 21:10-13). John was sent forth to speak as a prophet through the tender mercy of God (Luke 1:78). True prophecy will always be tempered with mercy.
In Jeremiah 1:4-10, God told Jeremiah that He was ordained as a prophet unto the nations. Prophets have the responsibility to establish the purposes of God. A true prophet hears from God and carries an authority to bring about change so that God’s people are able to enter into God’s purposes for their lives. The prophetic ministry is all about changing hearts, mindsets and attitudes towards God and His will. It is also releasing people to fulfil their God-given destiny.
