TOPIC: What’s In A Name? [Open Heaven for Teens 18 December 2021]

MEMORISE: And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh‘s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. Exodus 2:10

READ: Genesis 32:28 (KJV)

28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Jonah 1-4, Revelation 9:1-21

MESSAGE:

Names are very important in identifying someone. It has also been discovered that a persons destiny may be tied to his or her name as in Abraham’s case. Genesis 17:5 says:

“Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.”

Also, the names given to a fellow can influence the way people think or feel about them. For instance, if your name is David, you may be perceived as a humble but brave shepherd boy, Dorcas brings to mind a good lady who is sold out to goodwill. Of course, if your name is Enoch, you will likely walk with God till you see Him in glory. Amen!

If you have been given a name suggestive of idol worshipping or accredited to a deity, it may have a negative impact on your destiny. Moses means drawn out of water and the Bible records that his life experiences were centred around water, In fact, the reason God disqualified him at the tail end of his ministry was water. If you’re not comfortable with your name, discuss with your parents so that you can change it and begin to enjoy the blessings of God. It was after God renamed Abram that he received his covenant blessing.

KEY POINT:

Your name is your identity

HYMN: All Things Bright And Beautiful

  1. All things bright and beautiful,
    All creatures great and small,
    All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
  2. Each little flower that opens,
    Each little bird that sings,
    He made their glowing colours,
    He made their tiny wings.
  3. The purple-headed mountain,
    The river running by,
    The sunset, and the morning
    That brightens up the sky.
  4. The cold wind in the winter,
    The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
    He made them every one.
  5. He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
    How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.
